In the hybrid flavor, it can also cause a write outside an internal heap buffer, because decoded row indices were not validated. Several other header fields and decoded values, including lg_k, were also not validated. This can corrupt heap memory, causing a crash and potentially enabling further exploitation.\n\nThis issue affects Apache DataSketches C++: from 2.0.0-incubating before 5.3.0. Only applications that deserialize CPC sketches from untrusted sources are affected.\n\nUsers are recommended to upgrade to version 5.3.0, which fixes this issue.","cvssScore":9.8,"cvssSeverity":"CRITICAL","cvssVector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H","cwes":["CWE-125","CWE-787"],"vendors":[],"products":[],"references":[{"url":"https://github.com/apache/datasketches-cpp/releases/tag/5.3.0","tags":[]},{"url":"https://lists.apache.org/thread/s7wyoqyf120dl5ys8jtr26dskd6m485h","tags":[]},{"url":"http://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2026/10/10/3","tags":[]}],"exploitRefs":[{"url":"https://github.com/apache/datasketches-cpp/releases/tag/5.3.0","tags":[]}],"hasPoc":true,"ai":{"summary":"A critical out-of-bounds read and write vulnerability exists in Apache DataSketches C++'s CPC sketch deserialization function, which can lead to heap corruption and potential remote code execution when processing untrusted serialized data.","exploitability":"Exploitation is likely straightforward as it requires only passing a crafted serialized CPC sketch to the deserialize function, with no authentication or user interaction needed.","blast_radius":"The vulnerability affects applications that deserialize CPC sketches from untrusted sources, potentially impacting analytics, data processing, and machine learning systems that use this library.","remediation":"Upgrade to version 5.3.0 which fixes this issue.","detection":"No reliable host or network indicator is derivable from the published description.","tags":["memory-corruption","deserialization","cve-2026","heap-buffer-overflow","data-sketches"],"model":"garnet-coder","analyzedAt":"2026-10-17T08:45:44.740Z"}}
