Prior to 2026.04, the ATWINC15x0 driver's _atwinc15x0_sta_set_current_ssid function uses strcpy to copy an SSID without checking the destination size. When MODULE_ATWINC15X0_DYNAMIC_CONNECT is enabled, a nearby attacker can advertise a malformed or oversized SSID that is processed during Wi-Fi scanning, causing memory corruption and potentially a hard fault, denial of service, or code execution. This issue is fixed in version 2026.04.","cvssScore":9.6,"cvssSeverity":"CRITICAL","cvssVector":"CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H","cwes":["CWE-120","CWE-121"],"vendors":[],"products":[],"references":[{"url":"https://github.com/RIOT-OS/RIOT/commit/5209c1b84f9771342f079b7d5d94d8207fdd5f0a","tags":[]},{"url":"https://github.com/RIOT-OS/RIOT/releases/tag/2026.04","tags":[]},{"url":"https://github.com/RIOT-OS/RIOT/security/advisories/GHSA-gwgv-6976-hxrg","tags":[]}],"exploitRefs":[{"url":"https://github.com/RIOT-OS/RIOT/commit/5209c1b84f9771342f079b7d5d94d8207fdd5f0a","tags":[]},{"url":"https://github.com/RIOT-OS/RIOT/releases/tag/2026.04","tags":[]},{"url":"https://github.com/RIOT-OS/RIOT/security/advisories/GHSA-gwgv-6976-hxrg","tags":[]}],"hasPoc":true,"ai":{"summary":"The RIOT OS contains a buffer overflow vulnerability in its ATWINC15x0 Wi-Fi driver where strcpy is used without bounds checking when copying SSIDs during Wi-Fi scanning. This allows remote attackers to cause memory corruption and potentially execute code or crash devices.","exploitability":"Exploitation is relatively straightforward for nearby attackers who can advertise malformed SSIDs during Wi-Fi scanning, requiring no special privileges or user interaction.","blast_radius":"The vulnerability affects IoT devices using the ATWINC15x0 driver with dynamic connect enabled, potentially causing widespread device crashes, denial of service, or remote code execution across connected embedded systems.","remediation":"Upgrade to RIOT OS version 2026.04 or later to remediate the buffer overflow in the ATWINC15x0 driver.","detection":"No reliable host or network indicator is derivable from the published description.","tags":["wifi","embedded","buffer-overflow"],"model":"garnet-coder","analyzedAt":"2026-10-17T08:48:00.822Z"}}
